GET JIRO!: The BAKER

WBAnimation Character Design, GET JIRO!, The Baker.
Media: Digital Art.

In the third episode entitled, "The Ortolan," a sniper known only as "The Baker" appears, shaking things up with two assassination attempts.

This series was a ton of fun to work on because of the very quirky story, the colorful characters, and the world-building founded on the premise that everything is under the control of rival culinary syndicates. It is bloody, and gory, and horrifying, and-- hilarious as adapted from the hit DC Comics graphic novel by writer Joel Rose, illustrator Langdon Foss, and the late Anthony Bourdain, formerly one of the world's great chefs.

I was blessed to be accepted by a creative team of fascinating geniuses who were also truly good people, and it broke my heart not to have been able to complete the assignment before being called away.

***SPOILER ALERT!!!*** GET JIRO! is loaded with interesting characters who are gone before we get to really know them, and The Baker is one of these. It's so ludicrous to design chefs and cooks as gangsters of such brutality. One moment the viewers are sickened by the gratuitous violence and gore, and the next they're chuckling because of the humor so deftly interlaced. Through it all, the animation and the acting never fail to dazzle. Kudos to the entire production crew, from the showrunner, the producers, the art director, the episodic directors and all the amazing storyboard artists, the background and props designers, painters, and color artists, to the indispensable production supervisors and assistants, and my fellow character designers. Well done!
