FREEX: BOOM BOY

Malibu Comics Trading Card Art: FREEX, Boom Boy.

Way back in the days when Malibu Comics still existed, I received this as an assignment. But I don't recall the details, or even if this art was ever used. The concept is a depiction of Boom Boy (member of FREEX) as a child. Because of the scientific experimentation he was subjected to as a newborn, Ray Golic became a monster who was locked away in a basement by his parents. There, Ray immersed himself in a book he found, Mark Twain's "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn."
I tried to convey the horrifying shock of this character's plight with the ghostly image of his mother looming over him, the sadness of it all etched on Boom Boy's features, and the Huck Finn obsession with the denim overalls. With one strap undone, the boy's youth and innocence also come across, while the hard angles and thickness of his limbs hint at the incredible strength, and the potential for his gigantic size still to come.
