Sometimes the responsibilities of a character designer crosses over into other areas of a production. In this case, because statues were needed for the Hall of Justice, I needed to render elements that qualify as background art. I've only posted the statue for Superman here, but I did render all the founding members of the Justice League as immense carved figures. The idea was to evoke awe, as the young protegés of the League enter the Hall for the first time to behold this sight. I chose to take artistic liberties, stepping away from how the characters are depicted in the YOUNG JUSTICE show. I wanted to make the figures "larger than life," as if sculpted primarily from an artist's impression, rather than from the subjects' actual appearance. I was inspired by the various art deco sculptures around Manhattan (Atlas, and Prometheus). The reference I used for this illustration was a combination of the DC Direct (Fleischer) Superman Maquette, and, appropriately, the Colossus of Rhodes.
