X-MEN '97: GLADIATOR

Marvel Animation Character Design, X-MEN '97, Gladiator.

With the release of the art-book devoted to Season One of the series featuring this image, I have permission to share it online as part of my portfolio. I knew very little about Gladiator, and here was my first opportunity drawing the character. This is one of the more popular comic book characters being an obvious rip-off of Superman. Gladiator swipes from Superman even down to the primary colors scheme, the red trunks with the yellow belt, and the stylized emblem on his chest. Marvel Comics loved to needle rival DC at every turn, particularly when it came to aping DC's iconic heroes in "homages," or call it straight-out thefts. Even The Mighty Thor was intended by Jack Kirby to be Marvel's version of Superman. Did you know that?

***The X-MEN '97 art-book is one of the best of its kind, a must-have for every art lover, animation geek, and superhero fan. I highly recommend getting a copy for yourself.
