SMOKE

Character Design, Malibu Comics, SMOKE. Pencil, ink, opaque goauche.

This guy was to be half of an odd pairing, calling themselves "Smoke, and Rubble." Rubble is featured elsewhere in this photo album.
My design approach was to contrast this character with the other by keeping his motif relatively softer, most of the lines rounded off, almost to suggest a diaphanous quality like literal smoke. The darker texture in his bleach-white hair also reflects a wisp of smoke. This is all in contrast to the harder lines and suggested composition of his cohort, Rubble.
I chose to "cast" Smoke as an Asian for the sake of ethnic diversity, which had been too rare in mainstream superhero comics. It still is.
