Marvel Animation Character Design, HULK AND THE AGENTS OF S.M.A.S.H., Harpy.
In the second season episode entitled, "The Tale of Hercules," a harpy is one of many mythical creatures to appear. Of course, for me, it's difficult to imagine the world of Hercules without fondly recalling the classic adventure films featuring other Greek myths, and the stop-motion animation magic of Harry Harryhausen. My design for the harpy was, however, a departure from that of myth, opting for a creepier, more menacing touch. In addition to using a bat/pterodactyl/dragon motif, I borrowed liberally from the Green Goblin design for Sam Raimi's SPIDER-MAN movie (2002), and the Meg Mucklebones creature in Ridley Scott's LEGEND film (1985), designed by Rob Bottin. I was careful to keep my design female, but this distinction seems to have been lost in the final screen version. My color selections also vary from the final version, as I've decided to finish it all up long after the fact, just for fun.
